Jakarta has a healthy, vibrant music scene in which there are lots of varieties of bands that you can watch almost every night. Below is the list of venues that you should check out when you’re in town:

Cafe Mondo

This retro-looking cafe and vinyl store is the place to go if you’re in Kemang area, South of Jakarta. Located in the row of shophouses, this 3-level store has plenty of interesting drink concoctions and a good mix of Japanese and Indonesian food. Walls are adorned with vintage Indonesian bands and movies posters and space is decorated with knick knacks from around the world.

Top floor is home to High Fidelity in which you can find eclectic selections of music ranging from The Stone Roses, Polysics, to Naffi Sandwich. The basement often hosts various DJ events, playing encyclopedic, well-curated music such by local and overseas selectors such as Maft Sai (Zudrangma Records), Gratts (Belgian), Eddy J (Malaysia), Aardvarck (Netherlands), Asia Afrika Soundsystem (Indonesia). With tribute nights such as Yellow Magic Ochestra Night and occasional bands playing experimental or noise gig, Cafe Mondo is the place to go if you’re looking for an alternative place for music and setting.

Jaya Pub

Since 1976, this pub has catered to countless expats and locals alike with wry sense of humor plastered all over the place and not showing sign of slowing down. Every night, there is live band playing in which patrons can sing with the band. There is also a monthly event, held on a Sunday night, called Superbad, that showcase local indie talents with wide range of musical genre. Organized by The Secret Agents duo, this event has been going strong since 2008 with surprise guest performers such as The King Khan & BBQ Show and The Whitest Boy Alive. Next time you’re in Jakarta, make sure to check out this pub, with or without Superbad.

Another alternative space for plethora of Indonesian underground bands. A venue with a strong spirit of DIY, this multi-level area also offers a recording studio and home to Grieve Records that offers local releases and international records as well. Having hosted Jakarta Noise Fest, SlamFest, MaxxNoise, WHMH Festival, and many more, Rossi is a gathering place for kids from various scenes and also a hot spot for many underground touring bands when they come through Jakarta. Stop in during the day to shop at the record store and to find out what shows are playing.

A small club with an outdoor beer garden and an awesome Javanese restaurant. Hosting various bands and DJ nights, this compound offers an outdoor hangout with classic Javanese vibe throughout.
