Izaad Amir (1985 – 2012)

The music movement of Malaysia is in grievance this Tuesday morning. It has suffered a loss so ruinous by the passing of guitarist and composer Izaad Amir, who had been involved in a car accident in Johor Bahru at 1am this morning. Izaad has been the backbone and key contributor to Asmidar, Liyana Fizi, Narmi, and has been a friend to many. Izaad’s soft, friendly and warm presence was always felt for those who have had the opportunity to meet him, and any collaborations he has had with our artists, was always distinctly and powerfully felt by musicians and audiences alike. Izaad was a graduate from UiTM, involved in traditional Johor style Ghazal with other young traditional musicians in Ghazal music troupe, Daya Tebrau Ghazal Johor. An exceptional musician and one who silently shaped the sounds of our most significant, Izaad Amir’s passing is truly a huge loss to our local sounds’ coming times.

His multiple visits to The Wknd Sessions are unforgettable to us, having had the honor to see him play live in various styles with his various collaborations, but never without the Izaad Amir signature sound, style and presence. Prayers and condolences go out to the family.
