KUNTARI – Larynx

Bandung-based composer, sound artist, and multi-instrumentalist KUNTARI (aka Tesla Manaf) has released a new composition titled “Larynx”. It comes hot on the heels of 2021’s “Last Boy Picked”, one of our favourites from last year.

“Larynx” is a stunning combination of KUNTARI’s myriad influences, melding various ancient Indonesian rhythms such as Hadrah Kuntulan and Sar Ping (to name a few) with unconventional approaches to modern instruments such as cornet, baritone guitar, and percussion.

KUNTARI describes “Larynx” best by saying that “the combination of prepared cornet, percussive baritone guitar and hybrid percussion technique yielded a composition almost-devoid of tone and notes. It’s a mixture of unclassified heavy rhythm and shivering howl.” It’s a stunner.

Check out KUNTARI and Rio Abror’s intense live rendition of “Larynx” below:

“Larynx” will feature on KUNTARI’s upcoming album, set to release in 2022.
