LUCfest 2017 – 5 Acts To Watch

We’re venturing out a little bit on this post, featuring some acts beyond Southeast Asia that will be playing this weekend at LucFest in Tainan, Taiwan. Unlike the large-scale outdoor music festivals we’re used to, LucFest is a music showcase festival which puts an emphasis on connecting the region together via its conference segment, with international delegates from all over the world which includes artists and delegates from UK, US, the Netherlands, Portugal, New Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, China, Korea, Japan and Israel.

Similar to festivals such as SXSW in USA or The Great Escape in UK. And unlike promoter based music festivals, music showcase festivals offers the audience an opportunity to discover new acts. We’ve been invited to check it out, and here are some acts that we’re looking forward to see this weekend, after a bit of ‘crate digging’ through the lineup:

1) CROCODELIA (Taiwan)

CROCODELIA is a 3 piece psychedelic garage rock band from Taoyuan City in Taiwan, that blends enough elements of fuzz, fast beats, heavy reverbed vocals, and feel good surf rock psychedelia reminiscent of bands like Thee Oh Sees and Wavves.

2) Phum Viphurit (Thailand)

22 year old Thai-born, and New Zealand raised singer songwriter, Phum Viphurit, have been making waves in Thailand with his new single, “Long Gone”, as his music video on YouTube hits a million views recently. Viphurit’s music ranges from folk to dream pop.

Phum Viphurit will be performing alongside Euseng Seto X Kent Lee (Malaysia) and Bayangan (Malaysia), curated by Soundscape.

3) LEO37 + SOSS (Taiwan)

Made up of members from Taiwan, Canada, and Brazil, LEO37 + SOSS blends hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz and blues. The band has performed extensively since their inception 3 years ago, considering that they are actually a collaborative project between, you guessed it, LEO37 and SOSS.

4) Euseng Seto + Kent Lee (Malaysia)

“An Asian sound with experimental elements” is how Euseng Seto (formerly known as Flica) describes his music. Euseng now performs with Kent Lee, who is the bassist and vocalist of Fast Food Generation, and adds a different element to their performance.

5) Jade Eyes (Taiwan)

Founded in 2014, Jade Eyes is a 3 piece electronica act, which combines new wave and acid house in their earlier works, but have since moved into the slightly darker side of music – trip-hop, sullen ambient and reverb vocals.
