Wknd Watch: The Kids Are All Right & Please Give

People often say that good things come in pairs. Getting to see a good film made by a female director is already a rare thing since so few female directors get the chance to make one. But this year we’re treated to not just one, but two very good films by female directors Lisa Cholodenko (who did High Art & Laurel Canyon) and Nicole Holofcener (who did Lovely & Amazing and Walking And Talking).

Of the two, Lisa Cholodenko’s low budget indie The Kids Are All Right is definitely our favourite (it’s also one of our favourite movies this year), but that doesn’t mean that Nicole Holofcener’s Please Give is any slouch either. Both are wonderfully spot on and precisely acted comedy dramas about the modern family. And both offer some of the loudest laughs you’ll hear this year without even resorting to cheap and gross out comedy.

Even though we never got the chance to see them on the big screen here in Malaysia, they’re both now out on DVD, so you know where to get them! Check out the trailers below.
