It’s that time again: the Vans Musicians Wanted live showcase series kicks off this weekend with a show at Khizanat Hall in Ipoh, Perak. So, before we kick off, here’s a quick run-down of the three hopefuls competing for a place at the grand final.
Faris Fuad & Konfederates

Faris Fuad & Konfederates are a nine-piece band led by self-taught singer/songwriter Faris Fuad. The band’s calling card is a style of music that blends the roughhousing nature of punk rock with more suave ska and even latin elements that they call “rojak & roll.” It’s definitely music that demands you put on your dancing shoes, so their live show should be a treat.
HACKTICK!

HACKTICK! fly the party flag high and proud with their brand of pop-punk/easycore. Their band photo says it all, really: a bit of irony, a lot of fun, some nice chugs here and there, and a wholesale appreciation of what made Warped Tour such an institution during its long run.
Wickweaky

The name might bring to mind light-hearted pop-punk bands, but Wickweaky never actually cross the line into unabashed pop-punk despite their really obvious melodic leanings. If anything, they owe a bigger musical debt to alternative rock (and, whisper it, even emo) bands like The Get Up Kids and The Promise Ring. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare live alongside two bands that arguably come across as more energetic than them in Faris Fuad & Konfederates and HACKTICK!
The show starts at 2.30pm this Saturday (August 4). Check out the Facebook event page and stay tuned to The Wknd’s social media channels for any and all updates.
